If you’re going for all the achievements/trophies or get hooked on the multiplayer this is easily a thirty to forty hour experience. If you’re rooting around for all the collectibles (there are literally hundreds) you’re looking at a twenty hour single-player campaign. The demons seem to be terrified of this apparently unstoppable lunatic rampaging through hell and showing disdain for their Satanic lifestyle choices.Īs far as replay value goes, Doom compares quite well to the average FPS.
The Doom Marine is retrofitted with a comprehensive origin story, but pleasingly this does not prevent him from simply being an angry mute who just likes to smash things. There is some genuinely interesting environmental storytelling many of the literally hundreds of collectibles are data logs that do a surprisingly good job of tying things into the original game. The story is not exactly The Last of Us, but is pleasantly camp and provides plausible reasons to shoots things in a variety of sprawling locations. Taken together, this all manages to fit with the outlandish look and theme of the game, being just as ludicrous as the newfangled glory kills. The voice acting is solid enough, though the game is obviously not all that wordy. The game sounds great too, with the ongoing fiery massacre perfectly backed up by relentless guitar and synthesisers and a strangely catchy theme tune. The resolution drops are unlikely to be noticed by the average console gamer however and those that do will most likely applaud id’s commitment to performance. Basically, in demanding scenes the game drops the resolution rather than the frame rate, which means silky smooth gameplay at all times. The results are impressive even on console, where the developers have targeted a rock solid sixty frames per second, coupled with an innovative dynamic resolution solution.
There are appropriately hideous demons, based on classic enemies from the original, all wandering around suitably fiery and labyrinthine hellscapes and generic sci-fi laboratories. Glory kills and the surprisingly elaborate platforming feel like a perfect fit for the series.ĭoom is a graphical showcase, making a convincing attempt to translate the look and feel of the original games into the HD era. There are dozens of animations ripping a demons heart out through its chest and stuffing it down its gullet was a personal favourite. It’s completely unnecessary outside boss fights but incredibly satisfying. This is your cue to get up-close and hit the melee button for a delightfully gory finisher. ‘Glory kills’ are the standout new mechanic: damage an enemy with gunfire or melee attacks enough and it will become stunned, moving in slow motion and glowing brightly. Ammo is just scarce enough that you will occasionally have to try a new weapon, but my heart forever belongs to the Super Shotgun. The classic weapons return, including the legendary BFG, as do many of the classic enemy types upon which to use them. Checkpoints are fairly generous, though most of your deaths will come from a sometimes temperamental grab mechanic, at least on lower difficulties. Unusually for an FPS, you’ll find yourself doing a great deal of jumping and climbing, both in order to navigate through the sprawling maps and to reach cunningly hidden collectibles.

The controls sometimes feel a little obtuse for the console player, giving the impression that that this is principally a PC game, but the overall feel of the game doesn’t really suffer. The game requires constant movement to survive. There is no sprint button in Doom and walking is literally impossible. Think Bulletstorm with some basic platforming, a chainsaw, and everything is on fire. Forget the twitch shooting, corridor-explosion-fest that is CoD, the adaptive AI of Halo or the methodical cover shooting of Gears.
